Congo DR’s hopes of becoming African champions next year in Gabon have suffered a massive blow after losing star man Yannick Bolasie to injury.
The Everton of England winger is set to be sidelined for months after suffering a serious knee injury while playing in an English Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday.
The 27-year-old will have knee surgery after scans confirmed he suffered serious ligament damage in the 65th minute of the home game which ended 1:1. He will then face a battle to be fit again before the season ends next May.
It would have been Bolasie’s second Nations Cup campaign after he inspired the Leopards to a third-place finish in 2015.
The DRC have been drawn in Group C alongside holders Cote d’Ivoire, Morocco and Togo. They open their campaign against the Moroccans on January 16.
