Ghana’s controversial minister of sports Nii Lante Vanderpuye is set to lose his position as sports minister, after his political party lost the presidential elections in the country on Wednesday.
The former sports broadcaster’s National Democratic Congress led by incumbent president John Mahama was defeated by the main opposition National Patriotic Party led by president-elect Nana Akufo-Addo.
Vanderpuye has had a heady relationship with the Ghana Football Association since his appointment in January in a self-styled anti-corruption campaign to clean up the GFA.
He was not without his supporters, but an abject start to the 2018 World Cup qualifiers blamed on his acrimonious relationship with the GFA has taken its toll. The Black Stars have managed just one point from two matches and a change in the ministry will be welcomed by many, not least the GFA.
It is not all bad for Vanderpuye who will remain in parliament after retaining his seat at his Odododiodio constituency.
