Cote d’Ivoire are likely to miss the services of defence linchpin Eric Bailly at the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, after the Manchester United star picked up a fresh knee injury while playing in a league game on Wednesday night.
The 22-year-old had only just returned from a knee problem that sidelined him from late October to December 08, but United boss Jose Mourinho says his new injury is on his other knee.
Bailly picked up the problem early in the 1:2 win at Crystal Palace, but managed to play on until early in the second half when he could no longer continue.
The extent or the injury is still not known, and with the AFCON less than a month from kicking off, there will be real worries in his homeland about his health.
When asked about the extent of the injury, Mourinho told BT Sport: “We do not know.
It is not the same knee, it is the other one. It is the left knee. So he is not coming back to a previous injury.
Of course he has a problem with another dimension but he showed amazing character to try and try, and try until his limit.
Bailly played a key part in the Elephants’ triumph at the last AFCON and would be greatly missed if he fails to make Gabon.
The two-time African champions have been pooled with in Group C with Congo DR, Morocco and Togo.
