Peoples Digest Online- The Supreme Court has dismissed Uche Ogah’s appeal against Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State. In the lead judgement read by Justice Ejembi Eko, the apex court held thatf it is a fact that a public servant’s tax is deducted at source. It also said that Ogah failed to establish the allegation of false tax clearance information against Ikpeazu. Recall that there was uneasy calm in Umuahia and other major cities ahead of the judgement by the Supreme Court on the Abia State governorship.
Already, supporters of the two contenting parties, who are members of the PDP, have relocated to Abuja. Ikpeazu defeated Ogah in the PDP primaries ahead of the 2015 gubernatorial election in the state. Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court in Abuja had on June 27, 2016 sacked Ikpeazu from office as governor of Abia State, after the court found him guilty of tax offences.
In another judgement on 27 August, 2016, the Court of Appeal described the ruling by Justice Abang as a rape of democracy, and ordered Ikpeazu, who went there to appeal the judgement of the High Court, to retain his office. Subsequently, Ogah approached the Supreme Court where he prayed that the High Court judgement should be upheld. Meanwhile, a group, Civil International, said it was expecting the Supreme Court to set precedence with the Abia judgement.
